Brief description
The responsibility of the Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer is to uphold the quality of our software and customer experience through identifying and preventing defects from being introduced and ultimately that our software is fit for purpose.
Duties
- Review requirements, specifications and technical design documents to provide timely and meaningful feedback
- Create detailed, comprehensive and well-structured test plans and test cases
- Review user interface in line with prototypes and style guide
- Estimate, prioritise, plan and coordinate testing activities
- Design, develop and execute automation scripts using open-source tools
- Identify, record, document thoroughly and track bugs
- Perform thorough regression testing when bugs are resolved
- Develop and apply testing processes for new and existing products to meet client needs
- Liaise with internal teams (e.g. developers and product owners) to identify system requirements
- Monitor debugging process results
- Investigate the causes of non-conforming software and train users to implement solutions
- Track quality assurance metrics, like defect densities and open defect counts
- Stay up-to-date with new testing tools and test strategies
- Be aware of strategic & project deliverables as communicated by product owners and stakeholders
- Produce comprehensive evidence of testing documentation to accompany developed solutions, aiding the wider team to understand specific testing criteria.
- Work with software developers, product owners and stakeholders to identify the best solution for tasks.
- Investigating and using new technologies where relevant
- Any other duties that may reasonably be required in line with your main duties as requested by your line manager
Key Accountabilities
- Contribute to all aspects of software testing including interface, unit, regression, integration, functional and non-functional testing, perform manual/ad-hoc testing where needed and providing written documentation to support the QA process
- Contributing to a productive agile sprint
- Be actively involved in the refinement & estimation of tasks to help shape them from concept to development.
- Derive test cases from our user stories and acceptance criteria.
- Hold software developers to account, ensuring level of defect are align to key KPIs
- Actively contribute towards planning, ensuring that the development team is working towards an agreed upon sprint goal, progressing towards company targets.
- Maintain quality standards
- Introduce testing frameworks and tools to ease the testing process, and automate testing where possible. (including but not limited to automation, unit, regression, integration, non-functional, manual, and stress testing)
- Manage and maintain testing frameworks following their implementation.
- Derive test cases from our user stories and acceptance criteria.

Essential Qualifications:
- 7 GCSE’s (or equivalent) at grades 9-4 or A-C including maths and English
- 3 A Levels (or equivalent) at grades A*-C in any subject but preferably one in a numerical or computing subject (e.g. maths, Science, Computer Science etc

Salary: £20,000
Location: we are based in Hull (HU1 2HU) and you will be required to work from the office for a minimum of 3 days per week. There may be a requirement to attend the office for more than 3 days per week, especially at the start of the apprenticeship.
Training to be provided: As part of the Level 4 Software Tester apprenticeship standard, you’ll be registered as a member with the British Computer Society and be on a fast track to an industry recognised qualification and your dedicated industry coach will support you through a blended approach that will include remote, in person, 1-2-1 and and group learning.
